Pen-flourishing: Delft and South Holland; c. 1460-1480. Miniatures and painted decoration: South Holland, Monkey Master and Assumption Master (illuminators); c. 1480

Material:

Vellum, ff. 233, 164x117 (93x60) mm, 20 lines, littera textualis, Binding: 18th-century red morocco; gilt

Decoration:

Penwork initials with pen-flourishes in two styles: South Holland style (ff. 21r, 22v, 44v, 91r, 91v, etc.) and Delft style (`block'; ff. 30r, 33r, 35v, 38r, 40v, etc.)
Added: 6 full-page miniatures (106x58 mm) with border decoration; 6 decorated initials with border decoration (ff. 15r, 52r, 79r, 100r, 176r, etc.); all border decoration in South Holland style (`anecdotical monkeys')

Provenance:

F. Bankes of Wolfeton House, Dorchester; sold as property of A. Bankes in 1928 at Sotheby's, London (cat. 21 May, no. 30, fig.). Purchased in 1981 at Sotheby's, London (cat. 8 Dec. no. 109, fig.)

Utrecht calendar: feasts in red include St. Hippolytus, patron saint of the Oude Kerk of Delft (17 August)
